so apple offer some free training when you buy a mac, you can go to your local apple store and book in for some free training on most things. i decided to go in for the iphoto training, im good with computers but having a new mac its all slightly different to what i am used to.

i have to say that the iphoto software is very well though out, just being able to manage so many photos in a very easy way is perfect. the smart folders are just fantastic giving you the power to filter all of your photos in a very quick and easy way.

the faces part of iphoto is amazing, just tag a few photos of different people then iphoto runs off and finds more photos of that person.

im thinking its going to take a little time to go through all of my photos but once its done i think my life of photos will quick and easy.

Windows 7 January 8, 2009

Lets talk windows 7, windows 7 is going to be the next operating system from Microsoft and on the back of Vista it need to be a good one, personally I don’t have any problems with Vista and kind of like it. I admit that it has its problems and copying files and getting driver have always been harder than it should be, I did have high hopes for Vista and I think, like most of the world, these expectations were not met. Its not bad, just not as good as it could be.

So Windows 7, Due for release in 2010 at the start but now the date seems to be more like mid 2009 and good. From what I can tell it is really a vista base and all they are going to do is fix it and add some extras to make it more up to date. So its going to look better, be easier to use and one of the main extras is going to be the touch factor, a lot of multi touch aspects for all aspects of the OS.

I can be honest, Mac OS is a good OS and its very easy to use, it has both sides covered, its easy for the people who have problems turning the computer on and complex enough for people who get the old 486DX2 jokes but its just not for me, I like it but if I ever got a Mac I would, 100%, have XP/Vista/Windows 7 installed on it. As times move on I’m starting to see both Os’s come together, both of them picking up ideas from one another and both having problems (well Mac’s more recently as they grow in success) but after seeing Windows 7 I would say that this is the next step in bringing both OS’s closer.

As for Windows 7 its just fantastic, quick (quicker than Vista), very quick boot up, easy to install, no problems with drivers at all (it installed easier than vista for some devices), running a duel desktop works wonderfully well (much better that vista). I could go on and could even list every new thing that’s going be on there but I’m sure there will be someone else with more finesse with words than me will explain it all.

The Few things that made me smile, one is the option to have the wallpaper changing at set intervals (yes I know the Mac dose this) and how easy the display setting are, I could have installed the ATI controller software but windows 7 handled it very well. There are little things like the way you can now see different things by just hovering over the tool bar icons and each area splits down in to different windows, I found it very easy to manage my desktop when having 10 windows open. The organisation of my documents seams just to be better laid out and no longer a hunt for the file or folder.

I’m a user of media center and use if for music, videos and tv. The jump from media center 2005 to the most recent Vista was a big one, the vista version just flowed better and worked most of the time. The Windows 7 media center has just built on the success of that and is just fantastic, very easy to use. New functions like the rip you dvd’s and have all the information there, having folders set up for much more specific file formats which then makes sure the information is displayed in the correct location (now with art for movies).

Anyway here are some photos of some of the newer options.

Canon 450D and Jessops November 12, 2008

So its my lovely girlfriends birthday tomorrow and I asked her what she would like to mark 23 years of being alive knowing she had been looking at dress makers dummies which are around £140, so when I got a Digital SLR back as an answer I need to get my skates on. My girl friend know what I’m like, I won’t buy anything until I have read every review on the planet, I like to make educated decisions and I would like someone who knows what they are talking about to tell me if its any good or not.

Well the Canon 450D came out on top for what she needs it for, the Sony was a close second. So off to Jessops we went last night to get the camera of her dreams, got it all sorted about 10mins before they close and off home we went, got back and I said I would cook and she could sit and play with her new camera, out it comes with all the cables, cards, camera body ………………. No lenses. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant quite tell you how I felt, angry and frustrated would be in the same park. Before we all start it would be the body and lens I asked for and I know you can just get the body. So got up early this morning ask being at work today for 14 ½ hours was not enough and set off back to jessops ready for a battle on my hands, the price of the lenses is £170 and the difference between the body and body + lenses was about £20, I was the first person through the door and after explaining what I wanted and what I got I was poised to explode at the slights hint that it would be a problem and it wasn’t, in anyway, they were the most kind and helpful people I have ever been served by, I even got £10 off for the mistake, I’m still sat here 6 hours on slightly gob smacked on how good they were, so I would recommend the Jessops on Deansgate if you ever need anything in the camera world.

As for the camera its perfect, once I get to play with it I’ll try and get a little review from a ‘not quite sure’ photographer.

Moving Day August 27, 2008

Well I have moved, it took me the last 2 days and I still have a few things to get from the old flat, not quite sure where all this stuff came from. It was not an easy day as it was just me moving everything, I had a trolly which made the heavy lifting very easy but it was nice to go at my own speed, I think even if I had a army of people helping me move it still would have been a long day.

Its slightly odd being in a new place, don’t forget before my last flat I lived in a house for about 7 years, the last flat homed me for 1 ½ years so I’m still getting used to the moving around, I think at the moment it feels a little like a hotel just with all my stuff here. And it everything you expect from moving, nothing really has its place yet, you get things out of boxes just to put them back as you have no where to put them but I’m sure a trip to Ikea for some storage solutions would help.

Ok I know I go on about how bigger and better Imax is but I did find this photo of what the reall diffrence would look like to you being sat in that screen.

You can read up on why Christopher Nolan wanted to use this format here.

The image on the left is a normal 35mm screen, and one on the right is a Imax screen

I did go and see Cat Power a few days ago at the Academy and wrought a big blog about it but it just disappeared, in short it was good, got free VIP tickets and really enjoyed it.

Got a christening to go to tomorrow, an old friend has grown up and got a family. Any excuses for me to break out the old suit.

Camping May 22, 2008

I went camping last weekend, I would like to tell you where I went but I’m not exactly sure. I know it was in Wales and I know it was north, it is kind of on the very north tip, near that big power plant. I know it would appear that I had no idea where I was going but I did, it was just that GPS was telling me where to go. So anyway we wrere camping for my friend’s birthday, so me, my girl friend and Brain Splat all went over to Liverpool to pick the birthday girl up and then we were off. Once we got to the camp site to find that it only opens in august we then set off aging to find another and we did. It looked like one of those big houses you see in the film where everyone gets killed by the crazy lady, the lady happened to be nice but I’m sure they all are just before they kill you. We turned up and set up our tents and off we went for a walk before we tacked the BBq. The weather was not very nice, cold and raining but we were not going to let that get us down and just got on with it, we had a good walk and went around the cost for some time before it was time to get the BBq going. Now Brain Splat is one of the best BBQ’ers in the world and even though it was very windy and raining he still got all the food cooked and it was a wonderful meal.

So after a lot to drink we all went off to sleep just to wake up to a wonderfully sunny day, and what did we do with this day? Found a beach and sat there and what a nice day it was, did a little snooping around the rocks and has a few ice creams and burnt my nose but all in all it was wonderful. Didn’t get back till late and still felt knackered but it was a wonderful few days away and if I could remember where we went I would go again.

For most people the big thing last night was the football and I did follow a little but last night I went to watch the Black Keys. They played last year and if you follow my posts you would know that I didn’t go and watch them as it was my flat mate’s girlfriend’s birthday and I help sort it out, all my other friends went and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about it. Well this time it was my go as they finally came back to Manchester at the Academy. What a band, he reminded me of Jose Gonzalez in the way of when they play you would think there were 2 people up there playing guitar. The music was fantastic and so was the beer, have not been to the Academy since it has been done up and I have to say I could not really see much change, maybe it was me and being slightly drunk and it was dark.

You know I don’t really like the plastic cups but they come in really handy when you need to hold your pint and do some clapping.
